In 2014, Mali was going through a deep crisis, marked by political instability, the presence of armed groups in the north of the country and persistent insecurity. Since January 2012, an armed conflict pitted the Malian army against Tuareg rebels of the National Movement for the Liberation of Azawad (MNLA) and armed Islamist groups, notably Ansar Dine, AQIM (Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb) and MUJAO (Movement for Oneness and Jihad in West Africa).
After the occupation of the north by Islamist groups and Tuareg rebels in 2012-2013, these groups had taken control of the northern part of the country (Azawad), representing two-thirds of Malian territory, including the strategic cities of Timbuktu, Gao and Kidal.
In July 2014, despite the successes of Operation Serval, the region remained unstable with the presence of residual armed groups, various trafficking activities and numerous improvised explosive devices (IEDs) placed on roads.

This multinational cooperation was made necessary by several factors:
The crash of flight AH5017 occurred in a context of major security crisis in northern Mali, marked by the presence of armed groups and regional instability. The involvement of French, Malian and Burkinabe armies in search and security operations was due to the danger of the area, the need for regional cooperation and the presence of international forces already engaged in the fight against terrorism and the stabilization of Mali.
The rapid and coordinated intervention of these forces made it possible to quickly locate the wreckage and secure the site under difficult conditions, illustrating the importance of international cooperation in a region where security challenges remained considerable.
