MD-83 EC-LTV operated by Swiftair, Malian safety investigation assisted by the BEA, judgment delivered September 28, 2026
On July 24, 2014, Air Algérie flight AH5017, a McDonnell Douglas MD-83 registered EC-LTV and operated by Swiftair, crashed near Gossi in northern Mali during a scheduled flight from Ouagadougou to Algiers. All 116 people on board died: 110 passengers and 6 crew members. The Malian safety investigation, assisted by the BEA, described the probable obstruction by ice crystals of engine pressure sensors located on the engine nose cones, followed by erroneous EPR indications, reduced engine thrust and a stall from which the aircraft was not recovered. On September 28, 2026, the Paris Criminal Court found Swiftair guilty of involuntary manslaughter and imposed a €225,000 fine, the maximum penalty available.
The final safety investigation report states that Air Algérie marketed the flight under its flight number within an ACMI contract, while Swiftair supplied the aircraft, crew, maintenance and insurance and operated the flight under its own certificate. Air Algérie official website
