Company Overview

Swiftair S.A. is a Spanish airline founded in 1986, headquartered in Madrid. It specializes in charter flights, cargo, and wet-lease operations for other airlines. It is NOT a public airline - passengers cannot buy tickets directly. It operated flights on behalf of airlines like Air Algérie, Air Europa, Iberia, and others.

According to the final safety investigation report, Air Algérie had entered into an ACMI contract with Swiftair through Avico: Air Algérie marketed the flight under its flight number, while Swiftair supplied the aircraft, crew, maintenance and insurance and operated the flight under its own air operator certificate. Swiftair was the operator of AH5017's aircraft, the McDonnell Douglas MD-83 (registration EC-LTV) that crashed on July 24, 2014 in northern Mali. The flight crew (2 pilots, 4 cabin crew) were all Swiftair employees. Swiftair had been providing wet-lease services to Air Algérie for several summer seasons.

On September 28, 2026, the court convicted the company of involuntary manslaughter and imposed the maximum fine of €225,000. BEA Findings

The safety investigation was conducted by the Malian commission, with technical assistance from the BEA. The 169-page final report describes the following sequence:

The crew did not activate the engine anti-icing system despite being in conditions requiring it
Probable ice-crystal obstruction of the engines' Pt2 pressure sensors produced erroneous EPR values
This led to gradual loss of engine thrust
The aircraft entered an aerodynamic stall at cruise altitude (FL310)
The crew failed to recover from the stall
The FDR was usable. The damaged CVR provided no usable data

The safety investigation is intended to prevent future accidents and does not determine fault or liability. The separate criminal proceedings resulted in Swiftair’s conviction on September 28, 2026.
