BEA Findings

The safety investigation was conducted by the Malian commission, with technical assistance from the BEA. The 169-page final report describes the following sequence:

The crew did not activate the engine anti-icing system despite being in conditions requiring it
Probable ice-crystal obstruction of the engines' Pt2 pressure sensors produced erroneous EPR values
This led to gradual loss of engine thrust
The aircraft entered an aerodynamic stall at cruise altitude (FL310)
The crew failed to recover from the stall
The FDR was usable. The damaged CVR provided no usable data

The safety investigation is intended to prevent future accidents and does not determine fault or liability. The failures alleged against Swiftair belong to the criminal proceedings, on which the court has not yet ruled.
